Wołów is a town in Lower Silesian Voivodeship, about 50 km from Wrocław. The name of the town is derived from Polish name 'wół' and it means ox. The town was totally burnt in XVII century and then was rebuilt, but still it has a lot of monuments. Wołów also has the Jezierzyca Valley Landscape Park with the river Juszka and the Uroczysko Wrzosy reserve.

The Defensive Walls

We can start our trip from this special place. There are the last of defensive walls around the central part of the city from XV century. You can see sculpture of oxen and date 1285 when Wołów have become a town. This sculpture was put in 1965 and now it is a town's symbol.

Going along the defensive walls we come to beautiful yellow castle.
The castle was built in XIV century. Now, there is an office, and from Monday to Friday you can go inside, contemplate beautifull interiors and also walk into tower and see the view. In September there is special event, when tourists can visit the castle with guide and it is totally free. There is a Marian's columne in front of the castle. She is standing at the globe, surrounded by angels, and the snake, the symbol of  sin, is twinning around her legs.

Near the castle, we can stop in the city center, where there is a Town hall. It was built in  1692. It was repeatedly upbuilt and it was burnt in 1945. Now there is a register office and mayor's residence. In front of the building there is a sculpture of John the Nepomuk (Jan Napomucen). He is the protector from floods and drowning. In the place near the Town Hall there are big chess, and everyone can play.

The Church of Saint Lawrence (św. Wawrzyniec)

Our next stop could be in this old church. The Church was built in 1391 and from the one side there are defensive walls. On the outside walls there are baroque and renaissance epitaph. In the church there is original organ made by Adam Horatio Casparini in 1715. Since 2001 in the church has been organised Cantus Organi the International Festival of Organ's Music. In January also take place Christmas concerts with famous musicians.

Bank robbery

In this building took place very interesting story about Wołów. It happened in 1962, when the group of five men, with collectors' help, got inside the bank's treasury. It was the only bank in the city, so they stole about 12 million zlotych, and it was the biggest bank robbery in Polish history in that days. They was caught, because their wives paid in shops 500-bank notse, so first of all it was strange, and secondly those bank notes had serial numbers. In that, makers was cought by militia and sentenced for 25 years. You can watch a film "Hazardziści", that is about this incident.

Close to the castle there is a monument of the plane, and it is connected with the aviator and the only Polish cosmonaut, who was on the moon Mirosław Hermaszewski, because he is from Wołów. This monument is for Polish aviators and cosmonauts and it is the plane Lim-5P, which Mirosław Hermaszewski flew.

15 km from Wołów is a town Lubiąż, where is a former Cisterian monastery. The abbey was established in 1175 and it is the one of the largest Christian architectural complexes in the world and is considered a masterpiece of Baroque Silesian architecture. During World War II, the buildings of the former abbey were used for secret research laboratories and manufacturing facilities, among other things for the development of radar components and then saw production of engines for V1 and V2 rockets (using prisoners for labour). At the end of the war, the former abbey housed soldiers of the Red Army.                                                                   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lubi%C4%85%C5%BC_Abbey
